Talent shortage in digital industry?
Written by - Tim

This week I was chatting with a recruitment company that specialise in search and selection, servicing the digital agency community, and other technical roles within the industry. They were telling me that through their research and accumulative experience there to be a shortage of industry middle tier executives.

This got me thinking that this gap of experience in the industry will become a more serious problem if not addressed as the current level of experience, will not be able to hold pace with the current levels of industry growth and investment. Perhaps industry wide there should be more focus / emphasis placed on individual professional development and formalised training plans from graduate and entry level executives.

Any thoughts?

I am a recent grad and have been have just been hired for a position advertised as ‘Mid-Level Strategic Planner’. They probably offered me less money and will give me less responsibility than they originally had planned for the role but they had been advertising for months. I really think agencies (digital especially) need to invest more time in training grads to fill these mid level roles. We (Gen Y) have lots of digital knowledge but not the required experience. We are crying out to learn and we get stuck doing admin. I am stoked that I will be trained to the level that I will be able to apply for mid level roles.
